These are films noirs that should have a wide appeal and are a pretty good introduction to the genre:
Kansas City Confidential (1952)
He walked by night (1948)
T-Men (1947)

These films noirs are pretty good too, if you like the first three:
Scarlet street (1945)
The stranger (1946)
The big combo (1955)
The strange love of Martha Ivers (1946)
D.O.A. (1950)
Panic in the streets (1950)

Here are more film noirs worth ckecking out if you grow a serious liking for the genre:
The amazing Mr. X (1948)
the crooked way (1949)
Impact (1949)
The man who cheated himself (1951)
The woman on the run (1950)
Too late for tears (1949; stick to the MPEG4 file: the MPEG2 file and its derivatives all are missing about 5mn worth of footage)
Trapped (1949)
The scar (1948)

Some other crime movies that are worth a look:
They made me a criminal (1939)
Million-dollar weekend (1948)

A few comedies:
My favorite brunette (1947; film noir spoof)
The inspector general (1949)
The road to Bali (1952)

A few period pieces:
The four feathers (1939; set in the UK during the Victorian era)
The scarlet pimpernel (1934; set during the French revolution)
Reign of Terror (1949; set during the French revolution)

Anyone who makes the plural of "film noir" correctly must have good recommendations. :)

I should single out "Impact" as an especially good suggestion in that list. The acting is a cut above in that one. Long, though.
